HBO Documentary Films’ MURDER ON MIDDLE BEACH Debuts November 15

Murder On Middle Beach

HBO Documentary Films’ MURDER ON MIDDLE BEACH, a four-part documentary series directed by first-time filmmaker Madison Hamburg, presents Hamburg’s complicated journey as a young man determined to solve an unspeakable crime and absolve the people he loves, while looking for answers within his fractured family and community. MURDER ON MIDDLE BEACH debuts on November 15 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

On March 3, 2010, single mother Barbara Hamburg was found violently murdered near her home in the upper middle class enclave of Madison, Connecticut. Investigators speculated her murder appeared to be a crime of passion, but without enough evidence, the case grew cold.

Over the course of 8 years, Barbara’s son, Madison Hamburg, interviewed his family members and many others, longing to learn more about his mother and gathering evidence in hopes of solving her murder, sending him into a deep web of buried familial secrets, connections to shadowy criminal figures, and the uncovering of years-old resentments in his deceptively serene hometown. While Madison wrestles with troubling revelations about his mother, the most unsettling conflict comes from Madison’s obligation to bring into question those inside his community and members of his own family.

“At 18 years old, my worst fears came true when my sister called to tell me that my mother had been murdered,” stated director Madison Hamburg. “As much as I fought it, her death became a part of my life. Her memory faded and her case went cold, but I couldn’t accept that. Even if it meant sacrificing my own safety and sanity, I made my mother a promise when I started this project, ‘I will never let you be forgotten.’ It is less than what she would have done for me.”

MURDER ON MIDDLE BEACH is produced by Jigsaw Productions, Armian Pictures and Blue Days Films. Directed by Madison Hamburg; executive producers, Ron Nyswaner, Neda Armian, Toby Oppenheimer, Madison Hamburg, Stacey Offman, Richard Perello; co-executive producer, Evan Lerner; supervising producer, Whitney Johnson; producer, Solomon Petchenik. For HBO: executive producers, Lisa Heller and Nancy Abraham; senior producer, Sara Rodriguez.

SIEMPRE, LUIS, A Portrait Of Pioneering Activist Luis A. Miranda Jr., Debuts October 6 On HBO

SIEMPRE, LUIS, A Portrait Of Pioneering Activist Luis A. Miranda Jr.

A story that embodies the tenacity and passion of the American Dream, SIEMPRE, LUIS, debuting TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6 (9:00-10:35 p.m. ET/PT) during National Hispanic Heritage Month, is a portrait of the pioneering activist Luis A. Miranda Jr. Luis is a decades-long fighter for Latino communities, a key player in the New York and national political arena, and a loving father of three – including the award-winning composer, lyricist and actor, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The film will be available on HBO and to stream on HBO Max.

Directed by first-time filmmaker John James, the film had its World Premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The documentary centers on Luis A. Miranda Jr. who left Vega Alta, Puerto Rico for New York City in the 1970s. Filmed over the course of a year, Luis’ devotion to family and country propels him forward despite recent health issues. Always searching for ways to assist communities in need, particularly when his beloved Puerto Rico is suffering, Luis moves to action following the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, coordinating relief efforts and raising money and awareness while managing the complicated and ambitious tasks involved in bringing his son’s award-winning production of Hamilton to the island. With humor and heart, SIEMPRE, LUIS tells the story of an unstoppable changemaker and proud American.

The film tracks Luis’ journey in the United States, which began with his acceptance to a clinical psychology doctoral program at New York University. Following his move at the age of nineteen, Luis quickly finds success in the competitive and fast-paced world of New York City politics, becoming a key figure in communicating to political candidates the importance of engaging with the Latinx community. A natural problem solver and indispensable bridge to multi-cultural communities, Luis consults for a number of winning political campaigns throughout his career, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand’s campaigns for the U.S. Senate and Letitia James as public advocate and New York Attorney General, among others.

The film explores Luis’ vast career and influence in politics, including his time in the 1980’s as special advisor for Hispanic Affairs to Mayor Edward I. Koch, and Director of the Mayor’s Office for Hispanic Affairs. In 1990, Luis was the founding President of the Hispanic Federation, where he became one of New York City’s leading voices for increased support to nonprofit Latino organizations.

In 2017, when disaster strikes Puerto Rico in the form of Hurricane Irma and is quickly followed by the catastrophic devastation of Hurricane Maria, Luis uses his influence and resources to mobilize powerful figures and organizations to bring aid to his home island in a most dire time, working closely with his family along the way. He bears witness to unprecedented national political apathy in the face of the deadliest natural disaster to strike Puerto Rico, becoming an advocate for a Puerto Rican diaspora reeling in its aftermath. He grapples with a growing national xenophobia that threatens his family’s vision of a more inclusive Union. Without missing a beat, he works to bring a much-needed fundraising, and morale-building, new touring production of Hamilton to the island alongside his son, Lin-Manuel, all while remaining a committed father who refuses to outsource the around-the-clock obligations that define fatherhood.

Academy Award Winner Alex Gibney Directs The Two-Part Documentary Featuring Revelations Confirmed by the Recently Released Senate Intelligence Report

Let’s put the word ‘collusion’ aside for a moment…
and let’s instead use the word ‘seduction.’”

, Professor of History, Yale University;
Author, The Road to Unfreedom
AGENTS OF CHAOS, a two-part documentary directed by Emmy® and Academy Award Winner Alex Gibney (“Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” “The Inventor: Out For Blood In Silicon Valley”) will debut WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 (9:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), with part two airing the following evening at the same time, ahead of the November elections. The film is a product of years of reporting on Russian interference in the 2016 election. With never-before-seen footage inside the Russian troll farms, and videos unearthed from the Russian deep web, the film digs deep into the sophisticated plans to undermine democracy, raising the alarm for the American public, but also proving that these “agents of chaos” weren’t Russians alone; they were also key players in the United States who, through venality, corruption or circumstance, furthered Putin’s goals, with a vulnerable and unsuspecting American public as their target.

AGENTS OF CHAOS will be available on HBO and to stream on HBO Max.

Featuring subjects who have never before gone on-the-record, as well as those who have now agreed to speak at length, AGENTS OF CHAOS includes interviews with lead prosecutor for the Mueller Investigation Andrew Weissmann; former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe; former CIA Director John Brennan; Trump campaign advisor Carter Page; Trump business associate Felix Sater; Margarita Simonyan, Editor-In-Chief of Russian State News Agency; NSC Senior Director Celeste Wallander, who believes the anti-Clinton hacking operation – led by the GRU, Russia’s Military Intelligence – was approved by Putin himself; and cyber conflict researcher Camille François, who explains how the IRA, Russia’s online influence agency, intended to weaken democratic institutions in the U.S. and create chaos by exploiting existing divisions, using Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and Instagram.

By puncturing conspiracy theories from all sides of the political spectrum, the film offers a much more nuanced interpretation of what happened in 2016. There wasn’t one conspiracy to interfere illegally in the election – there were many – and the confusion and secrecy surrounding all of the many actors and events has made it difficult to discern the truth.

AGENTS OF CHAOS features the following ground-breaking accounts, many of which have been confirmed by the recent bipartisan report released by the Senate Intelligence Committee on August 18, 2020:

  • An in-depth cinematic account of Paul Manafort’s secret communications with Russia during the campaign from the man who brought him down – Robert Mueller’s lead prosecutor, Andrew Weissmann. Manafort’s actions were, in the words of the recent Senate report, “a grave counterintelligence threat [that] created opportunities for the Russian intelligence to exert influence over…the Trump Campaign.”
  • Revealing insight into how the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation into Trump campaign officials really started – not as a partisan scheme to attack Trump, but rather as a reaction to reports that the Trump campaign knew about Russian hacking of the Democrats at a time when only the FBI was aware that the hacks had occurred. As former acting director of the FBI Andrew McCabe recounts, the irony of the “witch hunt” narrative is that “there’s no organization in DC that had more of an impact on helping Donald Trump get elected than the FBI.”
  • The revelation that the FBI investigation did not start with the Russian military hack of the Democratic organizations in March 2016, but that the FBI had been watching the attackers hack people around the globe since December 2014.
  • An illuminating account of the inability of the Obama administration to blunt the attack, despite the best efforts of many national security officials to respond to what was happening.
  • An in-depth portrait of the troll factory and its owner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a.k.a. “Putin’s Chef.” The trolls were not just kids playing pranks on Facebook, but rather a professionally staged campaign to pit Americans against each other using tools the trolls had developed while helping to start a war in Ukraine.
  • A dramatic and detailed account of the creation of the Steele dossier, the memos claiming a well-developed conspiracy between Trump and Russia, featuring interviews with the man who commissioned the dossier, the FBI leader who oversaw an investigation that relied on it, and the alleged spy on the Trump campaign staff that it targeted. Rather than a Democratic plot against Trump, we find out that the investigation that led to the dossier started with Republican funders and was overseen by an ex-journalist, Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson, who had spent years investigating the Clintons for the Wall Street Journal.
  • The behind-the-scenes story of the negotiations during the 2016 election campaign to build Trump Tower in Moscow as told by Felix Sater, the man Trump entrusted with getting the deal done in Russia.

Building on his acclaimed oeuvre tackling far-reaching and provocative issues, Gibney delves into the complex labyrinth of internet warfare, raising salient questions about the extent of Russia’s meddling in the American democratic election process and asking at what point does a foreign power’s meddling in our sovereignty constitute warfare, and at what point does American encouragement of foreign interference begin to look like treason? Clearly and thoroughly mapping the intricate web of deceptions and interventions that occurred during the last election, AGENTS OF CHAOS takes a hard, clear-eyed look at our vulnerabilities as a nation and at the uncertainties surrounding our electoral processes, and draws a frightening conclusion about the very real possibility of it all happening again.

AGENTS OF CHAOS is directed by Alex Gibney; Part Two directed by Alex Gibney and Javier Alberto Botero; written by Alex Gibney, Michael J. Palmer; produced by Alex Gibney, Javier Alberto Botero, Kara Elverson; edited by Michael J. Palmer, Aleks Gezentsvey (Part One); executive produced by Lowell Bergman, Stacey Offman, Richard Perello; co-produced by Jennifer Jo Janisch, Clare Sloane Vance; co-edited by Ben Sozanski (Part Two).
