U.S. Army Reveals the People Behind the Uniform in New Animated Film Series

WASHINGTON, May 4, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The U.S. Army released “The Calling,” a new animated film series that profiles the deeply emotional and diverse origin stories of five Soldiers as they make the most important decision of their lives: answering the call to serve. At a time of a widening military-civilian divide, “The Calling” provides an important and rare inside look at the lives and motivations of today’s Soldiers, turning what was once a one-dimensional view of Army service into something more relatable.

“Research tells us that young people today see the Army as a ‘distant star’ – a place requiring a nearly superhuman level of discipline with little relevance to their daily lives,” said Maj. Gen. Alex Fink, Chief of Army Enterprise Marketing. “Similarly, youth don’t necessarily connect with those who serve or see common ground in terms of interests, abilities, and goals. ‘The Calling’ shatters these misperceptions by showing that Soldiers are all of us: real people with hopes, dreams, fears, aspirations, families, friends, and obstacles to overcome.”

The Army conducted a worldwide search across the forces for Soldier stories to support the campaign, receiving nearly one hundred inspiring entries. After settling on a shortlist of potential candidates, stories were tested to assess their resonance with today’s youth. The final “cast” provides a rich tapestry of stories that represent the diverse upbringings and life experiences that make up today’s Army. Featured Soldiers include:

  • Cpl. Emma Malonelord, U.S. Army (“Emma”): Emma seemed to have it all. A self-proclaimed “spoiled kid” – growing up with a supportive family, good education, and plenty of extracurriculars – Emma found herself seeking her purpose in life. While studying at the University of California, Davis, she admired the humanitarian efforts of some of her sorority sisters and began to feel a pull to be part of something bigger. After meeting with an Army recruiter, she said goodbye to her sorority friends. Though Emma’s moms were initially wary of her joining the Army, they understood their daughter’s desire to chart her own path and, now they are active supporters of the Army community by spearheading letter writing and care package campaigns for Soldiers.
  • 1st Lt. David Toguchi, U.S. Army (“David”): David never gave himself permission to dream about becoming a pilot. As a young boy in Hawaii, he spent hours watching helicopters take off from a nearby Army base. It wasn’t until his older brother, who was serving in the Army at the time, tirelessly encouraged him to chase his passion that David began to turn his lifelong dream into a reality. Following years of sacrifice and studies, David found himself in the cockpit of his very own Chinook. David’s story is one of resiliency that today spurs him to give back in any way he can, and lately, that’s volunteering at an orphanage in Honduras and giving talks at his church.
  • 1st Lt. RudSheld Plaisir, U.S. Army (“Rickie”): Rickie was a child of two worlds. Growing up in a religious family in Haiti, he experienced an incredible amount of culture shock when his family immigrated to Tampa, Fla., when he was seven years old. Rickie joined his high school JROTC program, where he fell in love with the idea of military service. During a 9/11 remembrance ceremony, he found himself overcome with emotion for his new country and the desire to defend it. He attended Florida A&M University, where he commissioned as an Army Signal Corps Officer. Rickie credits his continued service to the people serving around him and the comradery this provides, especially for someone living far away from their family.
  • 1st Lt. Janeen Phelps, U.S. Army Reserve (“Janeen”): Janeen had friends join the Army out of high school and felt equally drawn to its opportunities. At the time, her father – a Vietnam era veteran – was strongly opposed to his daughter joining. Instead Janeen began her undergraduate education at Lander University in South Carolina, but the events of 9/11 compelled her to return home to Las Vegas. A natural born singer, Janeen began picking up singing gigs on the Vegas Strip to cover college expenses, which led to a successful career performing on cruise ships. Her experiences traveling the high seas reignited Janeen’s longing to serve and be a part of the solution. This time, with the support of her father, she enlisted in the Army and later completed ROTC to become a Public Affairs Officer in the Army Reserve.
  • Spc. Jennifer Liriano, U.S. Army Reserve (“Jennifer”): Jennifer had to grow up fast. Born to first-generation immigrants from the Dominican Republic who worked long hours to make ends meet, she spent her childhood caring for her family. A series of events set Jennifer on the wrong path, causing her mother to send her to her family’s native Dominican town. The trip and the people she met changed how she viewed the world and stirred a calling to serve others. At 23, she met an Army recruiter who introduced her to the benefits of enlisting, including an accelerated path to a nursing license and scholarship support. Today, she is a platoon sergeant with the U.S. Army Reserve 865th Combat Support Hospital and, when she’s not in uniform, works in a cardiothoracic surgical ICU and is pursuing her nursing bachelor’s degree.

Animation was a clear creative choice for the campaign because of its visual interest, narrative flexibility, and Gen Z appeal.

New Research: 87% of U.S. Travelers Planning Summer Travel; More than 50% Considering Orlando


ORLANDO, Fla., May 4, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — As major travel destinations such as New York City and Las Vegas begin relaxing restrictions and re-opening for tourism, Orlando approaches its one-year anniversary as the nation’s frontrunner for creating safe and successful tourism experiences.  Recognizing the ongoing road to recovery during National Travel & Tourism Week, Visit Orlando hosted its first live, in-person event to share the latest outlook for summer travel, and new consumer travel trends from respected research firm Destination Analysts.

Orlando Leading the Return of Meetings

Orlando is seeing growing interest in meetings and conventions, with 84 citywide conventions taking place at the Orange County Convention Center, equating to about 900,000 projected attendees and 1.3 million room nights. Based on these confirmed events at the Orange County Convention Center, attendance this year could reach 73% of 2019 attendance. Comparatively, national projections on recovery for the meetings industry are at 35% of 2019 levels.

After a successful spring break period with Orlando occupancy rates climbing to their highest levels since February 2020, May occupancy may potentially dip, following a typical seasonal pattern for travelers. Results of clinical research published in the Proceedings of the Seventeenth International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) Conference and Expo, December 2020, confirmed Curcugen’s positive anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and analgesic capacity on subjects engaging in acute exercise. In this double-blinded, placebo-controlled study, led by Neil Schwarz, PhD, 24 participants were randomized to either a daily dose of 500 mg of Curcugen or the equivalent dose in rice flour prior to an intense exercise protocol of 50 hurdles and 50 drop jumps. Joint range-of-motion (ROM), soreness, and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress where significantly better in the Curcugen group 72 hours post-exercise demonstrating its capabilities in accelerating post workout recovery.

“Following an exercise bout, acute serial supplementation with Curcugen at 500mg improved knee range-of-motion and thigh pain tolerance when compared directly with placebo,” says Schwarz who acts as Associate Professor of Exercise Science at the University of South Alabama. “This is an interesting finding which warrants further investigation into the proper use of Curcugen for recovery after exercise.”

“Curcumin is not entirely new to the sports health industry,” notes Dr. Shavon Jackson-Michel, Director of Medical & Scientific Affairs for DolCas. “Curcumin most commonly appears in capsule and pill formulations. This could be due to its water-insoluble nature. While also applicable to conventional formats, like capsules and pills, Curcugen has been uniquely formulated with a self-dispersing mechanism that allows it to be easily integrated into powdered shakes and other functional applications, even at room temperature — perfect for on-the-go enjoyment.”

Over the last decade, the sports nutrition and supplement space has been making bold moves toward meeting heightened clean-label standards set by the growing pool of health-conscious, sports-active population. Formulators increasingly are exploring the botanical world for naturally derived sport performance boosters and post exercise recovery solutions to meet this growing demand. “Our raw material contains no non-turmeric or synthetic bio-enhancers, excipients, or binding agents,” confirms Jackson-Michel. “It also imparts a mild taste that serves to keep high-yield sweeteners at a minimum, with little need for masking agents.”

The role of curcumin in pre/post-workout supplements

Science affirms the botanical’s unquestionable positive impact on mitigating the negative effects of high-intensity exercises. It appears that these exercises lead to an overwhelming free radical/oxidative stress response that incites tissue-damaging inflammation, subsequently prolonging healing and recovery. Curcumin has been found to offer superior antioxidant benefits to the tissues, quelling the inflammatory response. Studies have confirmed this effect via the reduced presence of blood serum inflammatory markers during the post-exercise period, and reports of reduced pain sided by a speedy return to physical activity when compared to placebo.

Step into a new place in the universe

The doors to Avengers Campus welcome all Avengers, their allies, and new recruits. Tony Stark offered up the site, formerly one of his father’s Stark Industries complexes, as a place to train the next generation of Super Heroes.

The story of the land unfolds with authentic detail as Avengers Campus is comprised of several heroic locations, each hosted by a different Avenger or their ally to share their unique powers, technology and knowledge with recruits. The mission: team up with Spidey and help capture the out-of-control Spider-Bots before they wreak havoc on the Campus. During an open house at WEB, Peter Parker and the aspiring inventors ask guests to wear 3D glasses and test drive their latest invention, the WEB Slinger vehicle, which allows them to sling webs like Spider-Man and experience what it’s like to have super powers.

This family-friendly attraction blends physical sets and virtual environments to take new recruits on an interactive escapade. There is no height requirement for this attraction, allowing aspiring young heroes to join the fun.

Looming high above the land is the towering citadel of Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, a fan-favorite that opened in Disney California Adventure in 2017. Guests are the protagonists of this rockin’ adventure as they help rescue a cosmic gang of misfits. Pym Particles produce tiny treats and big bites

When it is time to take a break from the heroics, new dining spots will offer sustenance.

Pym Test Kitchen: Just as Ant-Man and The Wasp used “Pym Particles” to grow and shrink just about anything, the Pym Test Kitchen applies this innovative science to the food creation. This unbound potential allows Pym Test Kitchen to showcase normal foods at unusual scales, including shareable bites, inventive-sized entrees and tiny treats. As guests watch the Pym food scientists at work in the kitchen lab, they will see the transformation of a regular-sized pretzel after going through a quantum tunnel – and it comes out big or small!

Guests will be able to savor foods like the Impossible™ plant-based meatballs, both large and micro and served with pasta in a super-sized spoon with a tiny fork. Another choice is the “Pym-ini,” a panini on toasted focaccia with meats, cheese and marinara dipping sauce, which can be served by the slice or as a long, multi-portion sandwich. Those will go well with a glass of Pingo Doce, the distinctly green beverage from Avenger lore that will be available at Avengers Campus.

Gigantic soda cans and condiment bottles will be mounted in the vestibules as eye-catching art, and outdoor seating will be a great place to watch for Super Heroes.

Pym Tasting Lab: Adjacent to the Pym Test Kitchen, an oversized beer can overhead signals that grown-up beverages are available at Pym Tasting Lab. Guests may order a craft beer, ranging from a blood orange hefeweizen to an amber lager. These are poured from a different kind of draft system where, thanks to the food scientists, the glass fills from the bottom up. Those thirsting for something unique can try one of the Pym Research Staff’s Pym-Particle infused cocktail experiments, along with bite-sized snacks.

Shawarma Palace: Fans may recall that after the Battle of New York, the exhausted Avengers took Tony Stark up on his offer to try the food at the “shawarma joint” about two blocks from the battle zone. There at Shawarma Palace, the Avengers discovered their new favorite food. Disneyland Resort theme parks reopening

Magical moments are returning to Disneyland Resort theme parks when Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure officially reopen to the public on April 30, 2021, with limited capacity.

Because theme park capacity will be significantly limited to comply with governmental requirements and promote physical distancing, the Disneyland Resort will manage attendance through a new theme park reservation system that requires all guests to obtain a reservation for park entry in advance. To enter a park, both a park reservation and valid admission for the same park on the same date are required for guests ages 3 and up. Theme park reservations will be limited and subject to availability and, until further notice, only California residents may visit the parks, and in groups no larger than three households, in line with current state guidelines.
